Our county has an addiction,
oil imports! We pay $400 billion per
year for oil to nations that dislike
us. This weakens our economy. We
make foreign policy decisions and
alliances that are not in our best
long term interests. Twenty years
ago we produced 65-70% of our oil needs
internally. Today we produce about a third of
our needs and import nearly 14 million barrels a
day. That exported money is being used to fuel
growth in other nations, not in America. And
some of it is being used to buy American
companies. Are we NUTS????
Short Term
Encourage oil independence from OPEC. End the
restrictions on drilling oil and natural gas in
government owned lands except for national parks
where it would negatively affect the park’s
beauty and environment.
Expedite the
environmental approval process while ensuring
that the environment is protected. Do not permit
environmental radicals to file endless
challenges solely for the purpose of stopping
drilling anyplace, anytime.
Implement
an energy tax to encourage the development and
purchase of more efficient automobiles and
trucks, and to fund the long term fusion
project.
Continue to increase renewable
energy production with reasonable, but not give
away, incentives. Support geothermal, solar and
wind based technologies.
Fund smaller,
startup type companies doing innovative work.
The big oil companies have plenty of cash, they
do not need the government to give them taxpayer
money to develop alternative energy systems that
will make them money in the future. Let them
fund their own research and development.
Increase the construction of safe nuclear
power plants. Reduce the time to get permits.
Develop and implement a plan to move dangerous
radioactive byproducts to an underground storage
facility.
Increase the use of natural
gas rather than coal and oil which produce
greater percentages of pollutants.
Require clean air technologies for hydrocarbon
based energy production plants.
Long Term
Fund a project to develop nuclear fusion,
which is the source of our sun’s energy. It is
clean energy and there is no opportunity of
using the byproducts to build a nuclear device.
There are no pollutants like those that the
hydrocarbons produce. The technical issues are
huge, but the rewards are extraordinary. If this
great nation can put a man on the moon in ten
years, we can tame the power of fusion energy in
a decade.
